Grunwick Mural

On October 10, 2023, an extraordinary event is set to take place on Soho Road in Handsworth, Birmingham, as members from the DESIblitz team and the world-renowned truck artist, Haider Ali from Karachi, unveils a breathtaking hand-painted mural to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the Grunwick Dispute. This larger-than-life masterpiece promises to be a vibrant testament to the historical significance of the ‘Stikers in Saris’ and the invaluable contributions of people from the West Midlands including the Indian Workers Association based on Soho Road. Haider Ali's distinctive artistic style, which has adorned countless Pakistani trucks, will infuse the mural with vivid colours, intricate patterns, and intricate storytelling.

The mural will not only serve as a visual spectacle but also as a potent symbol of unity, equality, and the enduring legacy of those who supported the striking Grunwick workers. The location of the mural on Soho Road holds profound historical importance, as it was from this very community that the Indian Workers Association dispatched coaches filled with people to support the Grunwick strikers in their battle for workers' rights and dignity. The mural's unveiling, marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony, will be a poignant moment in the rich tapestry of Birmingham's history, celebrating the enduring spirit of activism and the power of art to preserve the memory of significant social movements. DESIblitz’s mural will be a timeless reminder of the interconnectedness of global struggles and the resilience of those who stand for justice and equality.

Come along to the Grunwick Mural opening on 10th October 5.30 - 6.30 opposite the Job Centre on Soho Road, Handsworth, Birmingham.
