We are committed to working collectively to create an Anti-racist Birmingham & West Midlands

The Birmingham Race Impact Group (BRIG) represents a new name for familiar faces—a consortium of activists and academics who have worked tirelessly to promote racial justice in Birmingham.

Formed in response to the stark inequalities exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the transformative momentum of the Black Lives Matter movement, BRIG is committed to driving ambitious approaches to fighting racism. By rethinking how we view national and local histories, they aim to resource the next generation of activists and document—for the first time—the successes of Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic campaigners in Birmingham over the last 60 years.

On Wednesday, 30 October, BRIG hosted its bi-annual summit, “What’s Changed?”, marking a historic day in the journey toward an Anti-Racist Birmingham and West Midlands. Leaders from every sector—city, regional, civic, public, education, private, faith, cultural, community, and voluntary—came together in a powerful show of unity.

The event’s highlight was the signing of a landmark pledge, committing these sectors to build a future rooted in equality and anti-racism for the city and region. This bold step forward signals a turning point in the fight for justice, inclusion, and systemic change.

BRIG continues to lead the way, bringing Birmingham’s best practices together to empower the next wave of activists and create lasting impact.

Leaders from every sector across Birmingham came together to sign a groundbreaking pledge, committing to making Birmingham a truly anti-racist city.
