Seeking the pioneers

Birmingham Race Impact Group is proud to launch Seeking the Pioneers, an ambitious two-year project that celebrates the powerful history of local race activism from the 1940s to today. With generous funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, this initiative aims to connect and inspire communities by preserving the stories of trailblazing pioneers who challenged structural racism and shaped modern Britain.

Birmingham has a rich heritage of anti-racist activism and movement-building. Through Seeking the Pioneers, BRIG will teach a new generation of creatives, activists, and historians how to collect and present oral histories from these transformative leaders. By documenting this legacy while it remains within living memory, the project ensures that the lessons of the past can empower future generations.

Thanks to National Lottery players, Seeking the Pioneers will “pass the baton” to those who continue to fight for equality and justice. Together, we will preserve and celebrate Birmingham’s meaningful contribution to the UK’s anti-racist movement, inspiring communities to build upon this extraordinary legacy.

We are excited to be compiling a booklet that celebrates our amazing pioneers, sharing their powerful stories and experiences. If you’d like to explore our first Seeking the Pioneers booklet, click here.
