SEEKING THE PIONEERS: Reclaiming narratives exhibition
A new exhibition has been launched to showcase Birmingham’s rich legacy of anti-racist activism. Organised by us at BRIG, and made possible by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the exhibition is a tribute to the pioneers of Birmingham’s fight against racism. It highlights the struggles, victories, and contributions of local activists who helped shape the city’s history of race equality.
After three years of development, this exhibit brings together stories and artifacts from Birmingham’s race activism history, preserving them for future generations. By “Passing the Baton,” BRIG aims to inspire younger activists to continue challenging racism and discrimination in the city.
This Black History Month, we have brought together over 30 pioneers from Birmingham's anti-racism movement to share their powerful stories. These individuals have played a crucial role in challenging racism and promoting equality in the city. Their experiences, struggles, and victories will be showcased as part of an exhibition aimed at preserving their legacies and inspiring future generations in the ongoing fight for racial justice.
Visitors can explore the exhibit from October 1st to 31st at the BRIG Warehouse Café on Allison Street, B5 5TH.
This exhibition marks only the beginning of a larger conversation on how to build a better, more inclusive future. We know as we dig further, more ‘pioneers’ will come to our attention. This is just the beginning.
